LAST PERFORMANCE AT KUNSTHAUS TACHELES

The performance “Remains” was my last performance at Kunsthaus Tacheles which was evicted September 4 2012.
From September 11 2009 until the 15th of May 2011 I had a studio on the 4th floor which also contained the 300 square meter Gallery as well as Barbara Fragogna`s project space SineDie project room.
During the time I had my studio at the 24/7 open to the public art house I did numerous performances for openings, during festivals and exhibitions using the whole building as a big performance stage. Since there was a constant flow of visitors who were interested in live art I had the chance to try out new approaches, exercise my awarenes of space and audience and discuss the pieces directly and instantly after the “show”.
It was a great pleasure to me to be able to use this amazing and historic space and to have the freedom in movement and choosing themes as well as in inviting other performers to partake in small or bigger collaborations.
Whatever one might think about the arthouse, the artists and the oranizational structures there:
To close its doors, shut it down to the public and to throw out the artists without any further option to save it as a landmark building with cultural purpose is a great loss for the city of Berlin.
It is a short sighted vision and by all measures not visionary at all to plan a commercial use or a common organizational structure in this historically important place, since how this unique space had been working, with the idea behind it, the funcionality in the chaos, was what made it great, interesting, amazing and so attractive for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.
The house was constantly developing, and hundreds of artists had the opportunity to work and exchange there with the greatest freedom possible.
It was not a place for the elite but for the people.
The oppennes and freedom brought diversity and also problems, and sometimes it was not easy to keep up with the fluctuation, the constant buzz and an inevitable shallowness.
But where is shallowness and scrap there is also profundity and depth to be found.
Something one could not find there was post modern trash hiding behind a glossy sleek surface.
In my opinion, in a world where all is made the same, where commerce and consumerism are the only common values, there must be places like the Tacheles, for the better or worse.
Berlin not only lost an “attraction” (one of the main) but also an interesting spot for cultural and international exchange.

Le Monde about Antonio Manfredi`s action and about the video in reference to “CAM Art War” which he developed for my Performance piece at dOCUMENTA(13). Interesting enough, the Italian Cultural Department wanted to stop the participation some days before the performance was to take place by pointing at a decree that would forbid the museum director to burn pieces of art of his own collection if they were older than 50 years or of relevance to the national cultural heritage. Paradoxically the department reacted to the participation in the performance not knowing that this was about to be the last action of CAM Art War and that nothing would be burned… (MW)

“Solidarisches Feuer-Signal nach Neapel
Kunst Die aus Forchheim stammende Künstlerin Miriam Wuttke hat sich mit einer Aktion auf dem Hetzlas an der Protestaktion „Bilderverbrennung“ beteiligt
Forchheim-Berlin. Spektakuläre „Bilderverbrennungen“ des privaten Museums für zeitgenössische Kunst CAM in Casoria bei Neapel aus Protest gegen finanzielle Not haben weltweit auf sich aufmerksam gemacht und solidarische Nachahmer gefunden (der FT berichtete). Mit beteiligt hat sich die aus Forchheim stammende Berliner Performance-Künstlerin und Malerin Miriam Wuttke.
Miriam Wuttke, die sich zum Zeitpunkt der Aktion zur Vorbereitung eines im Herbst in Forchheim stattfindenden Projektes in Franken aufhielt, hat zeitgleich zur Verbrennung eines Installationsteiles im Kunsthaus Tacheles Berlin auf dem Hetzlas bei Regensberg ein Aquarell „Burning for CAM Art War – Two kidneys for barbara“ in Flammen aufgehen lassen. Eine fotografische Dokumentation darüber hat sie als Solidarbeitrag nach Berlin gemailt.
„Gemeinsam mit diesen Werken geht die Kultur unseres Landes in Flammen auf“, meint das Museum zu seinem „Kunstkrieg“. Wöchentlich sollen dort mehrere Werke internationaler Künstler verbrannt werden. Das nicht subventionierte Museum zeigt rund 1000 Werke von Künstlern aus mehr als 60 Nationen.
Das online-Magazin Blouin ArtInfo hat das Statement der Forchheimer Künstlerin in einem Beitrag am 29. April zitiert: „Man verbrennt nicht einfach so ein Kunstwerk. Es ist ein signifikanter Schritt, um einen inneren Disput offen zu legen, den wir alle beschreiten müssen, um einen starken Standpunkt zu finden in Zeiten von Unbehagen und Rückgratlosigkeit. Ich weiß um Antonio Manfredis Arbeit als Museumsdirektor des CAM in Neapel und ich bewundere seine Stärke, seinen Mut und seine Radikalität im Bezug auf sehr schwierige Umstände, unter denen er tagtäglich arbeitet“ (siehe auch www.miriamwuttke.de). “

ART WAR in Berlin – Künstler verbrennen aus Protest ihre Werke

Am Donnerstag, den 26.04.2012, um 17:30 verbrennen die Künstler Barbara Fragogna, Petrov Ahner, Chiara Mazzocchi, Miriam Wuttke, Alexander Rodin, Chris Rautenberg, Robert Förster, Josè Urhè und Martin Reiter aus Protest Kunstwerke ihres Schaffens vor dem Kunsthaus Tacheles.
Solidarisch mit dem Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Casoria bei Neapel schließen sich die Künstler aus Berlin Mitte dem ART WAR an.
Das Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst in Casoria hatte im Mai 2011 künstlerisches Asyl im Kunsthaus Tacheles erhalten, nachdem der Antrag auf politisches Asyl von der Deutschen Regierung unbeantwortet blieb. Mit der Unterstützung der Protestaktion ART WAR im Rahmen der Tacheles Biennale 2012 setzt das Kunsthaus den Kulturaustausch zwischen Italien und Deutschland fort.

“…The Tacheles Biennale is a tool we want to use to create awareness. Starting with the opening on the 11th of Febuary 2012 in the Golden Salon (Goldener Saal) with the participation of musicians of the Symphony Orchestra Berlin, the Philharmony and the Berlin Opera, to the grand solo exhibition of Alexander Rodin in Potsdam, the TB 2012 runs under the motto of „real-time art and acion-driven politics“. Maybe it is about time to re- locate „political contents“, that means to allocate the subject to the place it should have been put down years ago: the trash pile of history.
The Arthouse Tacheles has the possibility to reflect integration, asynchrony and inhomogeneity like no other place in Berlin, and it does not have to follow some strange methods of cultural management. Without being bound to any kind of suggestions or restrictions of sponsors and foundations, Tacheles Biennale can draw on unlimited resources …
The festival is self- organizing, the singular events and artistic standpoints become a statement between accurate contemporary art and realistic politics- therefore their contents are dangerous as such. As an answer to the bigotry of romancing over the swarm as we see it these days in public dialogue as cheap spirit of the times, we frame a modest riot of good sense.
In the creative process of three and a half months of the Tacheles Biennale contemporary art will comment on, supervise and deal with the political and economical wheelings and dealings as a chance to experiment in a crisis which was produced by finance and therefore by possession per se…”
